Customize appearance of archives and category pulldowns

I would like to customize the appearance of the archives and category pulldown lists in the sidebar of my blog. Modifying styles.css in my child theme allows me to change font, color, size and it works for most browsers. It does not work on Safari on a Mac, nor on iPad, and other devices. Is it possible to style this for all (or nearly all) devices?
