Is it customary for a web designer to backup a website he designed? I ask because my site was deleted about a week ago (See Website Gone!!) and my designer claims all file were deleted from the hosting (GoDaddy) and database and that he had to "find" my site contents from other sources. Should he have a copy of everything I sent him? I have the Word files and pics, but the version he "restored" is not as it was before and it loks horible. Any clarification would be helpful as I may have to litigate this matter!!

Once he's designed the site he's bound to have a copy of that site DESIGN on his computer.

But - once he's handed the site over to you and you start making posts then (unless you have a contract to say that he regularly backs up your site, which isn't normal) the responsibility of looking after that site is yours.

That means making regular backups. Same as someone purchasing a car and getting it serviced regularly, it's your responsibility.

GoDaddy is at fault, I would suggest, because they SHOULD have backups of your database and site. Any good host provides that as a matter of course.
