• Hello,
I have a wordpress.com blog with about 80 posts. Though I have bought a domain, required hosting (bluehost) and even created a child theme for moving to self hosted wordpress site, I am still confused as backup/restore or security issues seem daunting to me.
Though custom upgrade wordpress.com has its limitations on the file access/php customizations, security/ backup and restore headache is taken care of.

Could someone experienced please advise me if backup/restore and security are really big issues on a self hosted wordpress site as I’d have to manage all by myself? Or is it just me who’s finding it overwhelming?

It can feel overwhelming. It is actually good to set up on self hosting, and you look like you are almost there.
As for the back up situation, all you need to do is install a plugin like
WP-DBManager, and set that up. With one click you can restore your site if anything goes wrong. It is the most simple plugin I found and you can set it up to automatically back your site up as often as you wish. Also for a worst case scenario, I am pretty sure BlueHost does weekly backups which you could restore your site using that if you had to.

Security is a hard thing to answer.

The problem here is that you are talking about shared hosting … in a shared hosting environemnt, you are quite limited on what steps you can take. You only have so much access to your server

The common sense things, complicated passwords, etc hold true. Google will provide you with many resources to help you do what you can.

Working with wordpress.org self-hosted setup is more complicated for sure. But as you said, more power and more freedom. The best thing you can go is Google around and educate yourself!!
