Custom theme based on Twenty Eleven, update necessary? Widgets not working (6 posts)

    Dear all,

Our site has a custom theme based on Twenty Eleven.

Since widgets such as amongst others AVH Extended Categories do not work anymore, that is, we literally cannot open the widget and thus cannot add postings to the categories and/or alter information in the footer anymore.
Peter van der Does thinks that this may have to do with a necessary (?) update of the Twenty Eleven theme.

    Questions:
    1. Is that indeed the solution?

    2. If I update the Twenty Eleven theme to 1.6, do I have to alter the whole site again within the custom theme? That really is my fear.(FTP shows under 'themes' resp.: PAcustom theme, Twenty Eleven, Twenty Twelve).

    3. Can I delete theme Twenty Twelve through FTP without risk? (I do not use it. I deleted it last week whilst making other adjustments as well, and it is back under the themes section.)

Thanks so much in advance. Much appreciated1
    Best regards.

Are you using a child theme? Or did someone foolishly edit the Twenty Eleven theme itself?

    Dear Esmi,

    Thanks for your reaction.
No, it does not seem that way.

    Theme Name: PAOnline CustomTheme
    Theme URI: http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/twentyeleven

Can I alter this to a child theme? For instance by following instructions from http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes?
    And afterwards update?

Or do you have another idea/solution?

    Thanks!

That looks like a custom theme. I think your best bet is to go back to the people who created this theme for you. It could be a very complex job to try and turn this into a child theme.

    Thanks Esmi,

    I'll do that. I'm glad I asked.
    Thanks!

No problem. Whilst you're speaking to them, ask them to turn your theme into a proper, new, custom theme. Leaving the theme uri pointing to the 2011 theme is really very lazy and potentially highly irresponsible of them.
