• I’m seriously grooving on Twenty Ten. I am not knowledgeable in php, though, and I want to ask before I break something.

I want a custom template for my static homepage, with sidebars on both the left and right. I would be happy to either move the “second sidebar for widgets, just because” or add another sidebar. Exactly which php files do I modify or create?

That tutorial is part of a whole new child theme. I don’t want a new theme. I’ve already customized Twenty Ten to look like I want it to. All I want to do is create a custom template that puts the secondary widget sidebar in a column on the left. I tried to create a custom template page, but it’s not showing up in the list, so I must not be doing it correctly. How do I do that, at least?

If you don’t use the widgets in the footer, you could add some CSS style rules for one of those – they each have a different ID. If you’ve already managed to get two sidebars, it wouldn’t be hard to re-style a footer widget area. Otherwise you have to add a new widget area in functions.php, and still add appropriate styling.
