On the paid version I have been looking at shortcodes. Is it possible to create custom shortcodes that would then allow you to put a non searchable subset of items into an existing page, by 'distance from', or even 'category'?

Sorry... I'm not sure precisely what you mean? Are you suggesting a shortcode that returns a search result, but the search queries are coded into the shortcode?
