Custom Role and custom menu

I need to provide a logged in WP user (who is not an administrator, author etc) with the ability to view non public data.

I have created a new role and capability and have placed the data in a custom top level menu to be viewed.

But when the WP user logs in at example.com/wp-admin they’re immediately redirected to what looks like the public facing website.

Any tips appreciated, thanks
