   I want to be able to fully customise the registration and login process. I'm also interested in having a login form (username and password fields) on the site itself.

   Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you.

   Any login widget should work. The login page can be customized just like single sites.

   The registration page, you can use a page template. There's a few hooks in wp-signup to add extras as well. buddypress, for example, uses hook sot completely replace the signup process.

   I am using Sidebar Login plugin and works great if that is what you looking for.

   Thanks, so my best option is to use a widget/plugin, rather than coding it myself?

   unless you want to reinvent the wheel. ;) just start searching in the plugin repo.
