Like to have a custom .php login screen where a user can enter his/her info into the boxes and click submit and they will be shot to the main part of my site

Do a search in the Plugins for custom login. There are several that may be what you want.

plugins are actually slowing my site down had to get a VP server from dreamhost man. thats why coding works best!

I doubt that a plugin for this would slow your site down because it would only be active while a person was logging in. Other plugins might access the database on every page view, and so could cause a slowdown.
