• I have a new stock WP 1.5 install located at http://www.spaceninja.com/wp_test/ – It has no posts aside from the test post that it installed with.

If I change the permalink path to “/archives/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/” then everything works fine.

But if I then also change the category path to “/archives” then when I try to click on a post’s permalink, I get the WP 404 page. Oddly, the category link works fine, but I can’t follow the permalinks.

I’m preparing to port over my blogs from MT, but if I can’t keep my URL paths the same, then I can’t do it – can someone help me find a solution?

PS – I already tried what most people have suggested for similar problems (deleting the .htaccess and recreating it from scratch).

This problem is very specific and is clearly related to having a custom path for the category archives.

  • You can’t have categories anchored in the same directory as the permalink (in this case both are in /archives/). The regular expression for categories gobbles up all strings and eclipses the permalink rules. A manual fix would be to move the category rewrite rules to the bottom of the rule list. Move the rules that start off with ^archives/(.+)/ to the end.

    Excellent, thank you!

How would this be implemented in WP 2.0+? Thanks!
