[resolved] Custom Fields (8 posts)

    I am trying to get more out of my wordpress blog. I am trying to display custom fields for 'Cost' and 'Location'. Reading the forums it seems like I need to cut and paste this to my loop.php to get these fields to display on my posts:

    get_post_meta($post_id, $Cost, $single);

    get_post_meta($post_id, $Location, $single);

    However, when I post this into the loop.php section of my default wordpress theme nothing every displays when I add a custom field to a post. I would like the custom fields to display on my main page and on the single posts.

    My blog is located at http://www.FlowBrewing.com

    I would really appreciate any direction someone could give me. I don't have any experience with php and I have spent several hours trying to get this to work and am running out of ideas. Thanks for the help.

    get_post_meta($post_id, 'Cost', true);

    get_post_meta($post_id, 'Location', true);

    Here is what I put in the loop.php and nothing is returned. I copied the beginning of the loop and you will see where I posted the suggestion below. Do I need to include any other scripts to make this work or is there anywhere specifically in the loop that I need to paste this? Thanks for the help.

    <?php
    /* Start the Loop.
    *
    * In Twenty Ten we use the same loop in multiple contexts.
    * It is broken into three main parts: when we're displaying
    * posts that are in the gallery category, when we're displaying
    * posts in the asides category, and finally all other posts.
    *
    * Additionally, we sometimes check for whether we are on an
    * archive page, a search page, etc., allowing for small differences
    * in the loop on each template without actually duplicating
    * the rest of the loop that is shared.
    *
    * Without further ado, the loop:
    */ ?>

    <?php while ( have_posts() ) : the_post(); ?>

    get_post_meta($post_id, 'Cost', true);

    <?php while ( have_posts() ) : the_post(); ?>

    <?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, 'Cost', true); ?>

    you need to echo the returned string of the function.

    Unfortunately this still doesn't return the value of the custom field when I add the custom field, save the draft and hit preview. I am going to attach the entire loop hoping that will help. Thanks for the assistance.

    You will see this line right underneath where the loop starts. Thanks.

    <?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, 'Cost', true); ?>

    ***************************************************************

    <?php
    /**
    * The loop that displays posts.
    *
    * The loop displays the posts and the post content. See
    * http://codex.wordpress.org/The_Loop to understand it and
    * http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags to understand
    * the tags used in it.
    *
    * This can be overridden in child themes with loop.php or
    * loop-template.php, where 'template' is the loop context
    * requested by a template. For example, loop-index.php would
    * be used if it exists and we ask for the loop with:
    * get_template_part( 'loop', 'index' );
    *
    * @package WordPress
    * @subpackage Twenty_Ten
    * @since Twenty Ten 1.0

    there is one price showing above:

    $7.99
    Two Jokers Double Wit

    and

    $5.00
    Lil Sumpin Ale – Lagunitas

    and

    $5.00
    Sierra Nevada Tumbler

    and more ...

    did you enter a value for the custom field 'Cost' in the newer posts (for instance 'Chang Beer') as well?

    Those I am manually entering when writing the blog post like this:

    Cost: $7.99.

    I want to use the custom fields so that data is usable via query's to display on different pages. Thanks for the help. I still really can't figure out why this is so difficult. Everything I google makes using Custom fields sound like it is easy. Thanks.

    I apologize. You are correct. This is working! Thanks for the help. I don't know why I didn't realize this when I was previewing my new posts. Thanks again for the help!
