   I have a custom field called thumbnail and I always have to manually enter this name when creating a new post. When I check phpmyadmin, I can see the custom field is properly saved and the meta value gets outputted in the theme, but If I check the dropdown of available custom fields in a post page, It doesn't display it here but does others like availability

   Anybody have any idea why?

   I would recommend using the plugin advanced custom fields... Much much better than WordPress default feilds, allows you to create custom meta boxes with your fields in them
