Custom date

Hi i am designing a new theme but i got a problem with dates.
I want to fetch only the day of the post (numerical) and name of the month in index.
I tried to use get_the_date function separately with M and n parameters but it didn’t work:S

What can i do to just fetch the number and 3 letter month separately?
