Custom Admin Interface to External DB? (2 posts)

    Hi all,

Somewhat new to WP but really liking it. I'm interested in building some admin screens to store data in a separate database from WP. In other words, I'd like to build some admin functionality that is outside of the realm of pages and posts. Can anyone suggest some good resources on where to begin with this?

    Thanks!

Consider adding your additional tables right within the WP db. It will make your life simpler. If that is not acceptable there is info around. A quick Google search came up with
    http://www.lbell270.com/index.php?page=web
    http://www.tyssendesign.com.au/articles/cms/connecting-to-external-database-from-within-wordpress/

I couldn't find it quickly but there is info in the Codex http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page somewhere about working with databases including an external. There is definitely info in the codex on adding your own custom tables with the WP database. Then you can use the WP database access functions on your custom data.

Here is a relevant page - your tables can be accessed this way also
