Geo Mashup
[resolved] Cumulative pins with numbers? (18 posts)

    Hi,

Any idea how to have the number of locations shown on a marker/pib for certain "far away" zoom levels?

Like when say I have 1000 pins (locations) in California and I look at the US map, it should show like a pin over California with the number 1000 on it. When I zoom in, I shall see for ex. a pin over LA with the number 550 (550 locations in LA), and a pin over San Francisco showing 450 (the number of locations in the area). When zooming further, I shall see for ex a pin carrying the Nr, 300 for LA city, one pin marked 50 for Glendale one pin with 20 for Santa Monica, etc. Once I get close enough the normal single pins should show.

    Possible? How?

    Thanks a bunch

This is called clustering. It hasn't been implemented for any providers but Google v2, but there is a request for Google v3:

Does that mean we're waiting for Google to implement something like this?

No, we can use that library or a different one, but it needs to be integrated with geo mashup features.

I have installed 1.6 beta, but see no difference?!
Am I supposed to do any changes somewhere or how is this supposed to work !!?

    Thanks!

Got it! I was a bit blind I guess :)

I'm so glad you didn't see it right away, Candy, or I don't know how long it would've been before I noticed this beta was out. The clustering works beautifully. Thanks, Dylan!

    Thanks, it didn't come easy!

There is a feed you can watch that includes beta releases:

Hey guys, to @candy2012 and @Dylan

I've installed 1.6 beta and I guess i'm as blind as Candy because I can't see any options to check to make clustering work. I have a map with two posts that share the same location so it should be working no? Just as this, as Candy posted

And... Is there any way to have clustering with customized numbered markers (in order, for instance 1 to 10)?

Clichem, have you looked on the Global Maps tab, 9th item on the list, just below Default Zoom Level? That's where it appeared for me when I installed the 1.6 beta.

    hey notkristina,

thanks for your reply but yes, I dit set a value on that field, 9. Default zoom level is at 9 as well.

What I get as a result is the default Geomashup white marker with a + inside meaning there's more than a post. I click it and it shows excerpt of the two posts, but shouldn't it behave like the previous link I posted?

Maybe I'm missing something? Need an API key? Do I need to add code to custom.js or am I missing a function?

Forgot to say thanks to Dylain in my previous message for such an awesome plugin!

    Thanks in advance

It sounds like maybe you don't have multiple locations close together, but rather multiple posts with the same exact location. I would think you'd need multiple locations before the map would cluster anything. If I'm wrong and you have lots of differently-located close-together pins that just aren't clustering, then this question is over my head and I will leave you alone to wait for Dylan. :)

I guess you're right - I will run some tests!

The other thing I was talking about, my other issue, is the "cumulative" customized numbered icons I want to display - i.e. icon with "1" goes with post X, and number "2" with post Y, etc.
    Just like here

Thanks a lot for your help, hopefully Dylan will join in, even though this thread was marked as resolved.

That's beautiful, and I'm interested in the answer, too. It's different from clustering, so maybe you should start a new thread dedicated to it (if you didn't already).

I've updated the Beta Documentation to help answer some of these questions:

Hey Dylan, thanks for the added doc! I'm hoping I will have time to look into in probably the next few days.

Is here the point where I need to start to get to have cumulative customized numbered icons?

    thanks again,

If you want to number cluster icons with something other than the number of markers they contain, that's where you'd start.

If you want to number individual objects on the map, you'd use with the 'objectIcon' custom javascript action:

    https://gist.github.com/cyberhobo/3693804

but instead of using categories to choose a marker you'd use a counter.
