This might be kind of vague, but is there a way to edit and manipulate a theme to reflect my site before uploading it? Also, is there a way to back up my current theme in case the first question is not possible and I have to activate a new theme before I can edit it?

its not clear what "to reflect my site" means in your question. If you mean "can I modify a new theme I am uploading to include my site personalizations", yes you can.
You can always back up your theme by copying the files from the server to a location on your computer, using an FTP program
files are in /wp-content/themes/{themename}/
