Creating multiple sites for different people - thought I had an answer (9 posts)

    Hello,

So I have one site built and am talking to someone about building a different site. Should I use a program like desktopserver to build a second site, test it etc and then send it to WP when I am done or should I use multisite or install another WP?

This is another existing site that someone wants to revamp and edit easier.

Which is the most efficient way to do this?

    Thanks

    Hi there,

Personally, I wouldn't recommend a multisite install for different sites unless you are managing them all. Set up and domain mapping is extra work, and a single install means a single host space - unless you're running a dedicated server and want that responsibility/control, I'd say it's easier to keep one site/install per host space.

As for how to develop it, yes, building locally is more efficient in my mind - you can then put it online to hammer out details with the client. I'll often use a password protect system, or a sub-directory for the prototype phase until it's been validated.

My two cents - hope they help.

    Jennyb,
Thanks. So my other question now is: If I do a separate install do I download WP again or just upload the one I have already used to their Isp? Thanks :)

It's always better to use a fresh download of WordPress.

So do web design companies just constantly download WP for every new client? That seems inefficient.

    Why is it inefficient?

Seems odd to have to keep downloading it if you already have it. Why can't they just make it where you download it as a program that allows you to build the sites then just export it to the isp? Or make it so you can have one version all for testing etc then upload it when done.

Simply put - because that's not how WordPress works.
