Support » Fixing WordPress » Creating mobile subdomain for separate theme but keeping content the same

  • Howdy experts!
I’m currently trying to figure out how to use an m. subdomain for sending mobile users to as I need to use a different wp-theme for mobile. Here are a few points of why I’m going about it in this way:

It’s a local service business and I want to have a much different home page and navi for mobile (things like click to call, etc.) and the current theme just doesn’t translate well to mobile.

Starting from scratch is not an option (ie. “why don’t you just use a mobile friendly/responsive theme in the first place?”) because it doesn’t afford the amount of layout flexibility I need to have for the mobile layout.

I tried running a theme switcher already but it kept messing up the active theme for desktop.

    What it needs to do:
Deliver mobile users to the m. subdomain, allowing them to use a mobile friendly theme (esp. for home page, services pages, etc.).

Deliver the same content as the desktop site (blog posts, comments, etc.)

Stay synced together with the desktop site (if a mobile user leaves a comment on a post it shows up on the desktop comments and viceversa)

Not be seen as a duplicate site by search engines.

    Current state:
I’ve got a mobile theme ready to go on the m. subdomain which is a separate install of wordpress on the WordPress Multisite. I’m trying to figure out the best way to go about syncing site data without being flagged for dup content. I’ve seen a few things around about the m. subdomain using the desktop’s WordPress database. I’ve also read pages about domain mapping and wildcards but I can’t put two and two together with how they could apply in this situation.

Also – Just to be clear – both domains are using the same WordPress Multisite install, they are just separate installs referencing each domain.

Also Also – Website MS is hosted on WPEngine

    Hoping for some ideas!
