Seriously Simple Podcasting
[resolved] Creating a Secure RSS Feed (7 posts)

    Hi all,

I'm currently trying to create a private Podcast for a large company. I've password protected the Blog using the 'Private Blog' plugin, but the Seriously Simple Podcasting RSS feed remains accessible. It's strange because the Private Blog plugin has protected my other normal WordPress feeds, but not the SSP feed at .../?feed=podcast

Any tips on how to password protect the SSP podcast feed manually? Is it possible?

    Thanks,
    Colin

Or, of course, any tips on how to make the SSP feed act like the other WP feeds and become password protected by the Private Blog plugin?

    Any help much appreciated,
    Colin

    Hi Colin,

The SSP feed works differently to the normal WordPress feeds, so it won't be excluded in the same way. I should be able to account for the Private Blog plugin though, but I'll need to see the plugin's code first. Could you give me a link to the plugin's page so that I can download it?

    Thanks,
    Hugh

Brilliant, thanks for your help Hugh.

You can find the plugin here:

It would actually be great to be able to just password protect a feed without the use of a plugin like this. Powerpress seems to allow it, but only with custom feeds, and I much prefer your Plugin's podcasting workflow anyway. Is there an easy way to add a username/password to the main feed without a plugin?

    Hi Colin,

That plugin is coded very strangely and it's tough to work out exactly where the password protection is implemented in terms of WordPress action hooks. That being said I am able to modify SSP to only load the feed template on the last possible hook - this should accommodate any plugins like the one you are using.

I like the idea of giving an option to password protect the feed, so I will add that in too and I will release all this (along with some other updates I want to make) in v1.4 of the plugin probably later this week. I'll post on here once it is released.

    Thanks for your input!

    Hi Colin,

Hi have jut published v1.4 of the plugin. Amongst other things, it includes an option to password protect your podcast feed - see the bottom of the podcast settings page for this new feature. Check out the plugin changelog for a full list of changes.

The plugin should be available for automatic update in your WordPress dashboard within the hour.

Thanks for helping to make this plugin better!

Many thanks Hugh - looks like it's working great!

I can honestly say I've never come across a more responsive plugin developer - I'll definitely be sticking with SSP :)
