MichaelH, i followed your advice to a T. it was perfect. ritchiem, have you started developing locally? if not, look into setting up wordpress on your "home" computer using MAMP (mac) or XAMP (windows) or ___ (not sure if lynux has such a utility).
if you're already developing locally, do the following: perform 3 - 5 installs of wordpress. work your way through them at whatever pace is best. you might use one as a duplicate of your live site; another as a "plugins" practice area. another to practice "michaelH's categorie's vs pages vs posts activity."
the worst that can happen is that one of your installs "breaks". well, simply delete the database, and delete the entire set of wordpress files. delete your trash. eat a snack. repeat.
before you know it, it takes you 60 seconds to back up a blog. 60 seconds to install wordpress. 60 seconds to install the "5" [insert any number] plugins you can't live without. 60 seconds to create a template for the static home page. 60 seconds to create a contact form. etc.
