Support » Fixing WordPress » cPanel premanenet 301 redirect vs .htaccess changes

  • Hi,

    My homepage lives on odedbenami.com/wordpress
I am interested in having it live in odedbenami.com

At the moment I’m using cPanel to redirect from odedbenami.com to odedbenami.com/wordpress.
cPanel says in its redirect window that it is a permanent (301) redirect.

I’m aware of the procedure laid out in this WP document ( http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory ) but I haven’t utilized it.

I’m wondering what’s the difference between using the procedures.

  • A 301 redirect allows search engines to follow the redirect as well, so that odedbenami.com will be referenced from odedbenami.com/wordpress. Still, the best way to do this is to physically move your WordPress install to your root directory so that you don’t have to worry about 301’s at all, which are really set up to direct outdated URLs.

    See http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress – it’s a pretty simple process.
