DreamObjects Backups
[resolved] Could we be selective vs. "All Files"? (4 posts)

Love the idea of your plugin but my DBs on all WP sites get backed up flawlessly and emailed to me already. What is *really* useful is being able to backup files instead of my old way: rsync to Amazon S3.

Since two of my sites have podcast directories within the wp-content directory, the backup is HUGE (one is over 2.5GBs and the other is 1.5GBs). There is no reason to have 15 separate backups of all my files. In fact, what I would like to have is a checkbox for each directory and subdirectory.

When I instruct clients how to manually backup files (since we set the DB to backup automatically) I have them backup .htaccess/wp-content/wp-config.php and any other directories they've created in the root. Anything else isn't needed for a restore.

    Thoughts?

Are you sitting in my office looking at the plan I have to attempt such a thing?

I think that is a great idea, and would really help with people who have huge sites, too. Right now I have it kicked around to just backup wp-content, since everything else is pretty static (.htaccess and wp-config.php of course would come along). Not that core WP adds that much weight.

*ponder* You know we could probably scp script that straight to dreamobjects...

Huh. If I totally skipped the zip, it could just backup in-perpetua.

Hmm...did you forget to put black tape over your webcam? ;-)

Seriously though, scp script would be cool. The issue with rsync are the shifts Dreamhost has made with my VPS OS (one time they "forgot" to upgrade), move to the new datacenter, changes in pathnames and other adventures that have broken my rsync process and it's just too much work to keep it going.

But the "Holy Grail" of backup is one master good one and incremental backups. I hate to use this metaphor but the "Time Machine" for WordPress (using Apple's great Time Machine backup which has saved my butt twice already) is what would be awesome.

Thanks for working on this Mika!

Oh man, if I could make that work, I'd be happy.

I actually want to strip as much of the work away from WordPress and PHP as I can, since ... well I have a strong opinion about backups, and I feel asking WP to backup itself is like asking my car to refuel itself. Seems kinda silly. The best backup would be for us to hook into Panel and do it that way *hides plans further from computer* but that's a little beyond my current skillset. Then again, this is how I level up.

But yeah, a master + incremental would be awesome. Only syncing what changed.
