WP 2.6 keeps writing endless file onto my server names 'core.xxxxx'. they're about 30 megs each and I've just had to delete 276 of them. I have to clear them out every day.
Possibly related: Upgraded from 2.5.1 to 2.6. Took down blog page because it only shows the accursed "500 internal server error" that seems to be intractable as I watch my hits hit bottom.
WordPress can't generate cores -- only compiled apps get that privilege. However, that could mean PHP or Apache or dumping core instead.
Do you have anything in your apache error logs that might be of help?

As stated above wordpress can not create core files. Look in the error logs or contact your host.

Agreeing with Samboll. The core files are the hairballs your server coughs up when it's having a bad day. You should contact your host before they contact you!
