control post excerpts length to fit on static home page

    How do i control the post excerpt lengths on my static home page sidebar so they will always fit in the space allowed? Currently site is a skeleton and i just have test posts. http://gracechurchhouston.com/
    Using WP v. 3.7.3 (not shown in drop down above)
    Using a blank theme that I’m customizing.
