   For textfield inputs the "size" and "maxlength" parameters don't have any effect. If my theme CSS is preventing this what do I look for, or is there a way to override those settings?

   Try using Firefox with the Firebug add-on for this kind of CSS troubleshooting. Or use whatever developer tool is available in your web browser.
