You will need to ask your web host about how to FTP to your account.

i did.. username: kks@midnight-mist.net OR kks , do i delete the @ and make it a …. ? pass: *******
You have to go into your control panel, ftp account, and see what the account name and password to enter are. Put those into your ftp program. You don’t use email addresses to ftp. The information you have in your example is incorrect. Your “hostname” is the info from your ftp account in control panel – not “ftp…etc”

where or how do i get to my control panel ftp account?
KKS,
Control Panel is an application provided by your web host to allow you access to the “inner workings” of your site. If you installed WordPress via Fantastico, for example, then you have already been in the Control Panel.
Check with your web host to see how to access it.

Can you explain “FTP your account”? What exactly is that doing? What does it mean? I can’t even download the new version of WordPress because of this issue. Can you provide more explicit help?

See if you can doing like informed here: http://www.kgarner.com/blog/archives/2009/06/13/direct-auto-update-on-wordpress-2-8/
In my case, I’ve just pasted the code on the last line of wp-config.php
I don’t know if the below information is really required, but here is what I informed:
Host: ftp://name.com.domain
Login: same as used to access CPanel (ask the service provider if you have any doubt).
Password: same as used to access CPanel.
It works for version 2.8+, as seen in the site above.
