    I downloaded and installed WordPress on my Ubuntu desktop 2 days ago. (My pc, not a hosting site for domains)
    I am trying to update WordPress itself and, install and update plugins for WordPress.
    WordPress keeps asking me for "Hostname" "FTP Username" and "FTP Password".
    I have Googled trying to find the answer but i cant find it.

    I think I know what the "FTP Username" and "FTP Password" is. Its the Username and Password I use to log in to WordPress at http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/ right?

    I have tried using different "Hostnames" like "localhost", my local ip address (192.168.0.130), 127.0.0.1, and some more.

    Please help me if you can.

    No. FTP logins are noting to do with your WordPress login details. Since this is a locally hosted site, why not just download the plugins, unzip them and drop them into the wp-content/plugins folder.

    You told me how to download and install them but you did not tell me how to update WordPress

    Also I just tried the way you said and the folder you told me to go to says "could not read the contents of WP – content" permission denied

    @jeremybeane

    Just so we're on the same page, what version of Ubuntu are you using, and would it be correct to think that you may have installed WordPress manually in /var/www, and not by using the "apt-get" method?

    You CAN download all new files, copy across, make sure it's the correct permission etc, etc every day or so (FUN!)
    OR
    define('FS_METHOD', 'direct'); in the wp-config does what Jeremy may have been after :)
