First of all – fantastic plugin!

Right now, as a new user, I’m having a really hard time getting my head around the sparsity of the language for the logic. What I mean by that, is that it is not clear, for example, to Show on Pages, when we select the “Show” drop-down, is it showing on all pages WITH exception of the checked pages, or WITHOUT exception of the checked pages.

In addition, because of this confusion, doing a simple task, such as showing a widget on ALL pages, or hiding a widget on ALL pages, is very hard to understand. I think part of the problem we’re having is that this (fantastic) plugin, allows very granular control, and trying to do a much coarser adjustment is harder to understand.

So! I’ve discussed this at length with a new WordPress user (& client), and we have the suggested change (let me know if our logic is wrong..):

Instead of “Pages -> Hide on all pages”
Change it to “Pages -> Hide on all pages, except:”
Change it to “Pages -> Show on all pages, Including:”

This makes it clear from a (less granular) perspective, that choosing the “Hide on all pages, except” option means that the widget will be hidden on ALL pages, and choosing pages would provide an exception.

Let me know if this makes sense, I’d love to discuss helping on the language to make the UX better.

    Hey Bob,

Great thoughts – we actually just had a similar conversation in the office here on this last week. I don’t necessarily love your suggestions, but I do agree that things could be improved. I’ll try to see what I can come up and post back here.

    cheers

I’ve just released 1.7, which is primarily an update to the instructions surrounding page and category logic. Take a look and let me know what you think.

@jason – well done! Makes it MUCH clearer what each option is doing!

I’m guessing my confusion stems from the fact that there is no clear default for when nothing is enabled – we know as experienced users that not enabling the control means showing on all pages/categories. But for a novice user, I guess it may be confusing at first blush: Do I need to enable widget control to show a widget? Maybe amend the intro text to “By default, WordPress shows all widgets in a sidebar. To control where this widget is displayed, select from the following options. “

Another note may help users is to have a help tab (does anyone read them?) – that explains that some themes may be hiding/showing sidebars, which can lead to a lot of confusion in and of itself.

Anyways – great topic of conversation, as the UX / IA of the sidebars / widgets has always been a pain point for WordPress.

    Also – minor typo: “Reults”
