    Hi there,

I've got a project in which we need to develop a website for price comparison in which the we estimate there will be tens of thousands of products in the database. The site database will feed off from other websites through XML.

It will be something like that: You're the shop owner (owner A), so you go to the website, create an account and add your products. The end user visits the site and search for something. The site searches for it and display 5 products (yours included). The user is interested in your product and fill a contact form. The shop owner (owner A) receives a email saying that user 1 is interested in product X.

I understand that there will be a lot of customization to get WP to do that - I'm guessing - but is it a good idea? Or is it best find another CMS?

    Thanks!

It sounds like what you have is a giant product system, not exactly ecommerce, but related to it. There are WordPress ecommerce systems, to be sure, but I have had mixed results with everything I've tried, and that was only with a few test products.

My impression is that WP isn't really strong for this sort of system, presumably due to its article-publishing type of architecture. Since you're in for a lot of custom work, I'd say shop more and find something that's more related to huge product databases, searching, emailing results, etc. Maybe more techie users will have a different idea.

I just wrote a blog article about how WP is getting so popular that people are trying it for "everything". And it just isn't for everything, as great as it is.
