Compare Revisions = Self Destruct? (7 posts)

This is bizzarre. I was editing an existing post on my blog, and at the top, the message appeared (paraphrase) "There is an autosave version of this post available" so I clicked the link to see the autosave version. I couldn’t really see what was different about it, so I clicked the compare versions radio button at the bottom.

What then appeared on the page, in Courier font, was the message, "Preparing to auto-destruct"!!! Then it started showing a countdown, 3...2...1...

I immediately closed the window before it reached 1, but when I went to re-edit the post in a new window, it brought me to my webhost's "page not found" page! What's more, when I click to edit OTHER posts, I get the same "page not found" message!!!

What the hell is going on?? Tell me this is some kind of sick joke.

You know, I've requested that feature in the past and I've never gotten it. And it's not even April. ;)

In all seriousness I'm not sure what's going on and I've never heard of that. You may want to make sure your file and database backups are current and keep them somewhere safe.

Hopefully someone's playing an inappropriate prank but just in case you have been hacked, give these a read.

The main page loads, but the individual articles do not.

I was hacked, but I had it (supposedly) cleaned up.

Actually, this is what we call an Easter egg, something silly hidden away that only happens if you poke around and do something weird, like trying to compare a post revision to itself. At least, the self-destruct thing you're describing sounds like the Easter egg.

That, however, does not explain why you are getting a page not found error with your host, but since it's your host's 404 and not the WordPress 404, I would bet that you need to go Settings -> Permalinks and hit save. If this doesn't fix it, your host may not support pretty permalinks.

So it really was some kind of sick joke? Great. Anyway, I'm glad to have my blog back up.

It's not a sick joke, and the 404 thing had nothing to do with it. It's more like discovering the flight simulator in Microsoft Word 97. More about Easter eggs in software and media: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_egg_%28media%29
