I've always had comments enabled on pages, but now the comments seem disabled there. Is this because of the new 2.9? (Installed it this morning) I guess it is.

Check that comments haven't been disabled in the theme's custom options.

Did you remember to press CTRL and F5 simultaneously when viewing the updated site? Or try emptying your browser cache? This should ensure that your web browser fetches a fresh copy of the page rather than serving up an out-dated copy from your own cache.
