Are these comments being published on your site? Or are they simply appearing in your Admin area?

They’re on my site at the bottom of posts. I don’t know how they’re getting there because each new post has “Comments are closed.” at the bottom. And then a few days later, there’s loads of spam comments there.
Spammers often access comments.php directly. Start by ticking “An administrator must always approve the comment” in Settings ->Discussion. Then install a good anti-spam plugin such as Akismet.

I run a charity website and there’s no spare money for Akismet. How do I configure WordPress so that comments cannot be made?
It’s not possible to stop spammers accessing the comment scripts directly. Another option would be to try using http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/cookies-for-comments/

@timdesain: A charity site isn’t really a personal site, is it? In theory, a charity site would come under Pro ($5 pro month).

If I don’t want comments at all, can’t I just remove the functions in comments.php? Better to stop it completely than to allow people to do it and then have me go in and delete them every day.

If there isn’t a comments.php template file in your theme, the core comment script may come into play – which means that spammers can still access it directly.

Each post I have has “Allow comments” unticked, and “Allow people to post comments on new articles” in the Discussion Settings is unticked, however I still get comments. I don’t want any comments at all on my site. How do I completely disable them?
