CommentCount Question

I installed Nick M’s CommentCount plugin (and activated it) and added the code to my comments section of the index loop.
< ?php get_comment_count(); ? >
what i was hoping for was each post would display a simple numeral of each individual post’s total comments.
instead i only get a total comments figure.
instructions say:
Can be used to count total number of comments or the number of comments for a specific post when used "in the loop."
what did i do wrong?
