Comment notification email not working (17 posts)

My blog has only been up for e few weeks, and although everything else seems to work fine, comment notification email does not work.

I've gone through the settings (admin panel) several times, and it should work.

Also I believe I can exclude errors caused outside WP, because user subscriptions generate email both to admin and the new user. So, sendmail itself works ok.
Also, the actual comments work, only the notifications do not.

I'm stuck and do'nt know what to try or to look for. Questions are as welcome as suggestions.

comment notification email does not work

    Do you mean:

    - you don't get notification when a comment is made to post?

-or the users who have subscribed notification when a new comment is added?

    I mean:

    - I don't get notification when a comment is made to post!

    Keep asking! :)

First check if these settings are correct (checked) in Admin:
    Admin => Settings - Discussion

E-mail me whenever: Anyone posts a comment
A comment is held for moderation
Before a comment appears: An administrator must always approve the comment

If all above info is correct, then try:

-deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to narrow down and possibly fix the problem. If the problem goes away, activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the culprit.

-switching to the default theme ("twentyten") for a moment by renaming your current theme's folder in wp-content/themes. The idea is to force WordPress to fall back to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific issue.

The three settings are and have been as above.
Deactivating all plugins made no difference.
Additionally switching to "twentyten" did not help either (it is now back to my theme).

Good suggestions though. Please continue! :)

I remember reading on these forums that some servers don't allow mails to be sent out unless your admin email is something that ends with your domain. For example, if your domain is example.com, only something like somename@example.com and not any yahoo, hotmail addresses, etc. Probably the hosting providers do this to combat spam.

Perhaps you want to contact your hosting provider.

Also, double check your email address in two places in the Admin area and make sure it's correct:

    -Admin => Settings - General

-Admin => Settings - Users - your profile

Good thinking. But all receiving email addresses are on my domain (schull.se), meaning it is also the same provider.

Also, with the same provider and type of account (different domain) I set up a phpBB forum, and there similar email notifications work fine.

The -Admin => Settings - General
    are info@...

info@... is also my (user) address, which equals:
-Admin => Settings - Users - your profile

But, the 'admin' (creator, with global access, and also me of course) has another address:
    webmaster@...

    Is that a conflict?

    I changed -Admin => Settings - General
to webmaster@... meaning that it now is the same as admin (not user).

    Still no notification. :(

-have you contacting the hosting provider if there are any limitations/restrictions, etc .

I doubt there are any limitations/restrictions since my provider promote and support installing WP. Never the less I will turn to them and ask if they are familiar with these problems.

    Thanks!

-Also, try clearing cache in your browser before testing the comment system. To clear cache in your browser, press clrl+f5 keys simultaneously. Also, try different computer/different browser.

I will try all the above again in various ways.

Cleaning the cache is also a good habit, but I prefer alt+cmd+e since your suggestion is for Windows. ;)

And I already tried Firefox, Opera and Safari.

I had the same issue and ended up here - but to me the plugin tip helped. It was the "really static" plugin (which somehow makes sense) and it even screwed up the appearance of the page after a comment was posted.

Good plugin though, hopefully there is a solution.

    And thanks for the tip/help!

i have the exact same issue and also ended up here. i have read 100 things on the internet with no luck. the emails are correct and match in both places. i only have 1 email address, so it is hard to mess that up. i deactivated all plugins and theme, no luck. i only had 3 plugins, so it was no big deal. i just registered for these forums and received my password from WP by email without a problem. so i can receive emails from WP.
anything else? something i might be missing?
thanks so much for any input!

ps- i did receive the first few notifications of new comments by email, but then no more. nor can i get it to send me one when i test by commenting. thanks!

Same problem here since upgrade to 3.2.1. I didn't change anything in the settings, it worked fine before.

    Previous setting:
    E-mail me whenever
    - anyone posts a comment,
    - a comment is held for moderation
    (both checked, rest unchecked)

Here is what did the trick for me:

    1) set the e-mail-address under Settings > General to the same one that's set in my user profile as admin

    2) Checked the "Before a comment appears -An administrator must always approve the comment" option once, saved, and unchecked it again, saved

It's mysterious, but it seems to be working now :) Had some test comments and got all notifications.
