   I have checked email notification in the dashboard.
   However when somebody reacts to a post the email notification
   is apparently only sent hours and hours later.
   Is this by design?

   most likely it's your host not WordPress. If you have your hosted email forwarded to say a gmail account for example, it can slow things down even more.

   but the smtp server is OK.
