• Hey everyone,

I’m brand new here. I’ve put up a couple sites in Drupal and I wanted to ask everyone if a certain type of site is possible to do in WordPress. It’s a site for my mother’s non-profit. I’m thinking Drupal would overwhelm here, so I’m here to see if WordPress can be an easier tool for her to manage the site. Here’s what I need WordPress to do. Can it be done (easily?)

    *Non-blog, regular website
*Single Sign on for site content and forum (could use phpBB)
*Group based permissions to make various features and various parts of the website hidden to the public, but visible to certain members
*Classified ads – simple and free ones
*Administrator approval of user-posted content – user posts, it goes to an administrative queue, then the Administrator approves or denies posting
*Photo Album/Gallery (just a single one for the site, with thumbs, not user galleries)
*Full forum functionality like phpBB ann/or vBulletin

Can WordPress be configured to do all of this, then have someone who is semi-tech savvy maintain the site by approving posts (as Admin) and changing around static content themselves?

My understanding is that this would work, but I really want to make sure, from you experts, before I start learning this software. I just think Drupal will be too much for her.

    Thanks!!

yes – just use static pages

Single Sign on for site content and forum

you can do this easily with the forum made by wordpress devs
    http://bbpress.org/

Group based permissions to make various features and various parts of the website hidden to the public, but visible to certain members

    yes with a plugin

Classified ads – simple and free ones

no problem – can do it manually or with a plugin

Administrator approval of user-posted content – user posts, it goes to an administrative queue, then the Administrator approves or denies posting

    yes with a plugin

Photo Album/Gallery (just a single one for the site, with thumbs, not user galleries)

    yes with a plugin

Full forum functionality like phpBB ann/or vBulletin

not sure what you mean – the BBPress forum I linked to is used by this site. Does this site have full forum functionality?

Thank you very much for that really fast and informative reply, Samboll.

I guess I wasn’t clear about that last bit. BBPress does look like a full featured forum to me… and I like the way it integrates right into a WordPress site (like this one).

Her non-profit is looking for user polls in the forum, as well as role-based visibility of various forum areas. For instance, one of her User Groups will be that of a member of the non-profit. Those non-profit members should be able to see an area of the forum that the general public can’t see.

Can BBPress handle displaying parts of the forum based on User Groups, in conjunction with the plugin you mentioned that will handle the User Groups/Roles on the WordPress side?

All in all, this is great news, that all of this functionality can be accomplished in WordPress. Thank you again for your extremely helpful post. I’m excited to get started here. 🙂

PollDaddy works (for me) in bbPress.

Check on http://bbpress.org/forums for the rest of the bbPress questions. I want to say that it should all work with bbPress plugins, but I don’t use them on my integrated site so I have no practical experience 🙂
