   I still get a server timeout when I try to access the codex. Other topic was closed, so couldn't reply there.
   Any ideas?

   closed for a reason. wait for it to return. it will be up when it is up.

   In the meantime, do a Google site search with some keywords and check the cached pages.

   Yes, please donate a few dollars so the WordPress developers can afford to buy more reliable servers.
