I think it's ridiculous you refuse to delete/close users accounts. I can't even change my username to attempt to remove my presence from this forum. The excuse that too many people were requesting account removals and then just giving up is just sad. Too many people want a feature so you throw your hands up and say it's too hard to figure out a better way? All the more reason i want my account removed.

to change your username, click the 'member' link below the username, this will open your profile page with an 'edit' link

I don't think 'giving up' is the real reason. It's probably more to do with maintaining accountability for the posts, and also plugins committed to the repository.
The account is also used for trac contributions.

You cannot delete an account at this time, and there are no plans to permit this in the future.
