    Is is possible that I use custom smilies/images and add some more in the custom smilies already given in the wp zip file? And how do I use it? Because I tried tweaking the vars.php and enabled the smilies in the options, but it doesn't seem to work. If anyone has an answer to this, thanks so much. :)

    Yes, you just need to add them to the config-extra.php file. :)

    I just wanted to say a belated thanks to Southerngal. I just did this last night and it looks great.
    Silly question - where exactly in the code does it let you specify how many smilies show up? I get all of them (including doubles, weird) in the post area but only a selection in the comment pop up.

    Alex King has a really nice smilies hack that doesn't display doubles and it works with the my-hacks.php file, so it makes upgrading easy.

    i tried using the smilies hack but it gave me this error:
    Warning: main(wp-grins.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/sandy/public_html/my-hacks.php on line 1
    Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required 'wp-grins.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/sandy/public_html/my-hacks.php on line 1
