Choosing multi-column layout by category (4 posts)

I have been rather dropped in at the deep end and asked to have a look at creating a custom theme for a site. One of the requirements is to have differing numbers of colums in our list pages for differing categories.

Some will be 2,3 or 4 columns (each page showing only that many articles).

Is there a way in wordpress to set a number of posts to show per category?

Thanks, it is easy enough to get the data out of the database but we need the content editors to be able to set the number of columns by category.

For example when creating a category called news they decide that this will show the 2 column template but a category called "What's on" will show 3 columns etc.

I can use template parts to show the right number of cols but how can we set that within wordpress? I can't find it natively so I'm hoping there is a plugin

[edit]Kind of like posts per cat (link) but not global[/edit]
