[resolved] Child theme won't show in dashboard (9 posts)

    I have searched other posts on this subject and have tried resolving issue the same as others but nothing is working. I installed WP on my computer (in Downloads folder)using Bitnami. I created a twenty twelve child folder ("twentytwelve-child")in WP-content/themes and saved a style.css file with info as directed by WP support:

    /*
    Theme Name: child of twenty twelve
    Description: child theme based on twenty twelve
    Author: Kathi Gerritsen
    Version: 0.0.1
    Template: twentytwelve
    */

    @import url('../twentytwelve/style.css');

    (also tried " instead of ' but get same result)

    Supposedly just saving this file in the themes/child folder will automatically upload the child theme to my blog, but nothing happens. FYI, I haven't set up a local host (no WAMP); After setting up/saving the appropriate folder and style sheet I checked the blog site through Chrome but there is no child theme showing in the themes. I'm wondering if it's because the site I am working with is in a subfolder of a subfolder of my root folder - a dummy site I want to use for learning and messing stuff up. So maybe my local WP just doesn't know where to connect to the right site? Man, I don't know. Surely there is some step I am missing that will direct my child theme to the correct web address. I'm so confused. I very much appreciate some help from someone with patience. Thanks in advance.

    Do you have WP running on your local computer?

    I mean is it working with the regular twentytwelve theme?

    Yes I installed WP on my local computer via Bitnami. It's in my Downloads folder. I'm so sorry but I'm not sure what you mean by "is it working with the regular twentytwelve theme". The twentytwelve theme shows up in the themes folder of my local WP. And it is also installed/activated in the themes section of the remote WP site I'm working with. I haven't messed with that at all. Sorry, but what specifically do you mean by "is it working with the regular twentytwelve theme"?

    If your site is live on a server, that's where you need to create the child theme - you need to access the files on the server using FTP (or other file manager access your host uses). The only thing you do on your local computer is create the file using a plain text editor. You don't need WP installed on your local computer if you have a site on a server - it's one or the other - they aren't connected to each other.

    So you need to upload the child theme folder to the server.

    Thank you so much. It seemed illogical to me that something saved on my computer would automatically "talk" to the website, but that's what the instructions seemed to be saying. Thanks so much for your help.

    @MARGO77 - if you are using a local install, your question is not the same. I just answered your thread.
