[resolved] Child theme has no formatting (25 posts)

    I've just created a child theme from the minimatica theme, however it didn't seem to carry any of the formatting over. I've checked my style.css and there are no extra spaces, caps are correct, etc. Please help me! Thank you.

    Your Child Theme stylesheet (style.css file) should only have CSS in it, not HTML.

    Use Codex's article on this as guidance.

    Not sure what that means, but here is what's in the style.css file

    /*
    Theme Name: child of minimatica
    Description: Cool child theme based on minimatica
    Author: Heather Kehoe
    Version: 0.0.1
    Template: minimatica
    */
    @import url('../minimatica/style.css');

    There is no style.css file on your server!

    Hi esmi,

    I apologize, I'm still a little new to this. I have the style sheet under child of minimatica. When I click on the link you've attached it takes me to the unformatted child site of minimatica.

    Meaning my ftp? I've been altering files on my hard drive and then uploading them onto my ftp site, which seems to update wordpress. I'm starting to think I'm updating the wrong thing?

    Meaning my ftp?

    Yes. Ensure that the child theme's folder has been correctly uploaded to wp-content/themes.

    Ok. I just uploaded the themes folder onto wp-content/themes and nothing changed, it still looks the same. What am I doing wrong????

    Not sure yet. What happens if you switch back to the parent theme?

    It reverts back to the generic minimatica theme.

    So the issue is definitely in your child theme. What application are you using to create your child's style.css file?

    dreamweaver

    Try using a plain text editor such as Notepad.

    Sorry, I'm working on a mac, so I had to download jedit. Just re-wrote the style.css, but it didn't change anything. Thanks again for helping me!

    Download a pre-made Twenty Twelve child theme from here and see if that works on your site.

    It works! So, clearly I'm the problem.

    Do you have access to Textwrangler? Or Textedit?

    I have textedit

    Then try using Texedit to create your style.css file and ensure that it is saved in UNIX file format using ANSII encoding.

    So, I created a plain text file with the .css extension but still nothing. I also tried to create a text version in dreamweaver and the convert to .css but still no success. And then I tried to create a text version and rename when i placed it onto the server, but that didn't work either. When I activate my child of minimatica theme it says This child theme requires its parent theme, Minimatica. Is this normal, or does it not recognize the parent theme for some reason?

    So did you check on the file format textedit is saving it in as esmi mentioned above. And just to be sure, the file structure is correct?

    wp-content
      themes
         minimatica
         child of minimatica

    The file structure is correct, both minimatica and child of minimatica are in the themes folder and the only item in the child of minimatica folder is the style.css file.

    When I go to save the plain text file, I have plain text encoding box, which offers a number of options. It seems the default is Unicode (UTF-8). The closest thing I could find to ANSII is Non-lossy ASCII. I have no idea what this means, but those are my options.

    It seems the default is Unicode (UTF-8)

    If you are saving the .css file as UTF-8, that could be causing a problem. Can you try Non-lossy ASCII?

    Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    I still can't get minimatica to work, but I tried a different theme and created a child site, using textedit and non-lossy ASCII and it worked. I'm not sure what part of the process made it work, but all that matters is that it does.
