• Hello,

On my site/blog I have multiple categories organized in parents and children of each other. They don’t work as I originally thought. Here is how part of it is set up:

    Parent Category:
    -Super Smash Bros.

    Child Categories For This Parent:
    -Super Smash Bros. Melee
    -Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Melee and Brawl are titles part of the SSB franchise. If an article I write only applies to Brawl, I would apply it to that. If an article I write applies to all Smash games, I would apply it to the parent.

I would think that if someone chooses on my site to view all posts with “Super Smash Bros.” as the category, it should view all posts from that category only. This is the case – good.

Now if someone chooses to view all posts with the category “Super Smash Bros. Brawl”, it only shows posts in Brawl, and nothing else. I would think it would show all Brawl posts, and all generic Super Smash Bros. posts, aka moving up the ladder.

The reason I don’t apply posts that pertain to all games to just every game at first is because in the future I would add another Super Smash Bros. game when it comes out, and when that category is added, I would like all those generic Super Smash Bros. posts to also apply to that category.

I hope this makes sense, is it possible to do?

That’s because some of the posts that match the parent will not match the child. But the user clicked on the child category. So, from his point of view, many non-matching posts were found. Using your example, something that was specific to Melee might be found since it has the common parent of Brawl, even though it may have nothing to do with Brawl.

I’m in the middle of trying to comprehend how categories work too, so I don’t have too many answers yet.

I did find out that if you choose to view a parent it views all children. I missed that by accident in the confusion of organizing my categories.

I was just wondering if there is a way for it to work in the reverse sort of, where when viewing a child category you also see all of its parents as well.

So I can write an article that applies to all Smash games and give it the Smash parent, so if someone views Brawl or Melee they see it. The reason for not selecting both Brawl and Melee is because when I inevitably add another Smash game, it’s automatically populated with all of the generic Smash bros articles and I don’t have to go through all of my articles and add Smash 4 to them.
