Checking if a user has clicked a certain button

Hello,

At the top of my site I’m planning to have a box containing social media information, and there’ll be a ‘close’ button to allow the user to hide it.

Ideally I’d like that box to never show again if that user has closed it on a previous visit.

The site wont be using sign-up or accounts of any sort, so will this require some cookie use of some sort? I’d like to avoid using cookies if possible.

Or are there any plugins for this sort of thing?
