[resolved] Changing width (breadth) of Post Writing Text Box without using a mouse (8 posts)

    Hi,
since I am blind, I am accessing my wordpress blog (http://www.jaunscorner.com/blog) using my keyboard only.

Recently, I noticed that the edit box in which I type the text of a new post only displays about 10 characters on each line and I would like to change this, for writing like that is not really easy (you get hundrets of lines without actually saying anything...).

I already found - in options > Writing - the possibility to set the numbers of lines of the text box, but not the number of characters per line.

I am guessing that it would be possible, for mouse users, to pull the text box to adjust its size; but can someone tell me how I can do the same using my keyboard (maybe changing something in the MySQL Database)?

I am using the Non-WYSIWYG environment and just upgraded to WP 2.0.1

Thanks for any help! And all the best,
    René

I have posted to the hackers list for advice on your post.

There's a resizeable text box extension for Firefox. That should let you stretch the width, although it wouldn't be a persistent setting.

But if the OP does not use Firefox .. ?

the definition of the relevant textarea indicates 40 cols rather than 10, so I'm assuming your browser is translating some css. Try the following 'Wide Post Editor' plugin:

    http://www.semiologic.com/res/wide-post-editor.zip

unzip, upload to your plugin dir and activate. it will override the textarea's default css. Let me know if works, and if you want it even wider.

renejaun - apart from the solution offered by Denis, the fact that my post to the hackers list has otherwise been passed by would indicate that the actual answer is No.

Fortunately, we have to answer with No very rarely in these forums. Unfortunately it is an accessibility issue like yours when we do need to use it.

Hi everyone (and sorry for my delayed answer to all your posts..),

bdjohns1, Unfortunately, I am indeed not a Firefox user, but as soon as my Screen Reading Product supports it, I am going to be the first to start using it :-)

Denis-de-Bernardy, thanks so much for your plugin. I downloaded and installed it and it solved the problem to its half:
Indeed now the textarea became wide in the most wonderful way; unfortunately, now some elements are being put over the text I am writing, since they are probably not moved away.
For example, if I am writing the following text line:
    abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

Then, to me in the middle of this line appears a checkbox with the name of a category to post in and it looks like about this:
    abcdefghijklmnopqrs (x) This Blog bcdefghijkl......

(I hope this was understandable - if not, I could try to post a screen shot or something.

So of course the next question would be: Is there any way of moving all those elements that are right now placed next to the edit box moving below it?

So if you or anyone from the hackers list can still be of any help, I would really appreciate it most!

For now, I again thank Denis-de-Bernardy for the plugin and keep looking forwards to any help!

    Best wishes,
    René

UPdate: Oh sorry, I think there is actually no further change necessary. I guess my screen reader screwed something up after I activated the plugin. However, I did not have anything being written over the post edit box.
So I'm all hapy with Denis-de-Bernardy's plugin!

    Best Regards,
    René
