Changing the way multiple pages in a post works. (4 posts)

Lets say for w/e reason I have a post that will be split up into multiple pages. I figured out how to do that using the <!--nextpage--> option. This works pretty well except for posts where there are ALOT of pages say 20.

Is there anyway I can get the post to display something such as next or previous instead of page 1 2 3 4 5 6 7... etc

Another solution to my problem would be to just create actual pages for each page. But then that would show up in the navigation bar. Is there anyway to create pages but hide them from the navigation bar?

    That is a really long post . . .

Ok, how about creating your post as a pdf file. The use part of it in the blog to catch the essence and then a link?
