    I am using the theme "Matala" currently on my website. How do I know if I am allowed to change the stylesheet.css? Is it ok to change a lot of the look of the original theme or is that unethical?

    Also, how do I know if I need prior permission to do so? and if i do need permission, how do I do that?

    Thanks for the help in advance!

    Any changes to original theme files will erase once the theme is updated.

    The point is, if you're making a Child Theme, you need not worry about these factors.

    check the license information of the theme;

    all themes from http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ are GPL which means that you can edit whatever you want.
