I have a website that is active on the Internet and I want to optimize the site under a new domain name but still have the old domain name active so that when people type the old domain name in their browser's address bar, the website still comes up.

    Two options:

    1. Create another WP install and keep both synced (manually or automatically, depending on what's possible with your host)
    2. Redirect all visitors from the current domain to the new domain.

You can install another WP and keep it synced either in manual way or automatically. It depends upon the possible host you are using. You have to redirect all the viewers of your current domain to your new one.Just try, it may help you.

    - Take a backup of your old domain's htaccess file.
    - Remove everything inside it
    - Add Redirect 301 / http://newdomain.com/
