Changing permalink structure botched my site

    I changed my permalink structure, and now my entire site is botched. I cannot figure out the problem! I switched from the default structure to /%postname%/. Immediately after, the site stopped loading correctly. It looks like the stylesheet is not loading. The same problem exists even if I switch to a different theme. Even the backend is messed up (no stylesheet, apparently). All of the content is there.

    I have tried replacing the .htaccess file to no avail. Switching to a different permalink structure does not work. Is there something I’m not thinking of? I don’t know where to begin to look.

    delete the .htaccess entirely
    now try the default permalinks
    if on a linux server this should set everything right

    not sure why the change would affect site in the 1st place, though
    you didn’t change one of the site url’s?

    Thank you, deleting the .htaccess and reverting to default permalinks has at least fixed the website. Actually, the css loaded correctly as soon as .htaccess was wiped out, but of course none of the links worked.

    I am still perplexed as to why this is happening. Switching to any of the other permalink options will break the site again. I had not made any changes prior to switching the permalink structure. I am working on SEO, and was really hoping to switch the permalink format, but at this point I will leave it alone until I can figure out what is causing this. Apparently my server doesn’t like something about the .htaccess file?

    Ok, I have finally discovered the problem! I was using a plugin called Script Compressor, which was adding some code to the .htaccess file. I don’t understand why, but using anything other than the default permalink structure interfered with the plugin, and the CSS file would not load. I deleted the .htaccess file, deleted the plugin and then changed the permalink structure from default to /%postname%/ like I wanted. It appears that everything is working smoothly now!

    As much as I enjoy learning new things, I wish every change I made to my site wasn’t such an adventure. Thanks again, samboll, for your help!

    I have a similar problem, and am not able to resolve.
    I will try to explain what is happening.

    the above link is the default structure. and works fine, but when I change to /%postname%/

    http://www.nightofa1000thrills.com/chatter/about/

    following the file pathway to images results in

    http://www.nightofa1000thrills.com/chatter/about/images/desert_scene.jpg

    instead of

    http://www.nightofa1000thrills.com/chatter/images/desert_scene.jpg

    I have done a couple of blogs before and don’t recall this problem.

    Another example, when clicking onto a category and following pathway to missing image

    http://www.nightofa1000thrills.com/chatter/category/1000-thrills-news/images/desert_scene.jpg

    the permalink structure seems to be inserting itself into the pathway.

    Hope I made some sense, any tips would be great,
