I don't know if this is already part of the system, or needs a plugin to work, but the ability to either move images from 1 parent post to another ( in essence, to different galleries ) is what I'm looking for.
Is this possible or does a plugin need to be installed ? Does a plugin exist ? I can't seem to find the right search terminology to answer my questions.

I have not seen one that does exactly what you are looking for... last time I checked, there is a one to one relationship for parent to child on posts to images. I have put together a simple plugin that might help you in the short term, but it's far from a perfect solution :)
